About Us
UC Berkeley’s Merchanical Systems Control (MSC) Lab, directed by Professor Masayoshi Tomizuka, is a leading center for research in robotics and mechatronics systems. The lab supports more than 20 postdocs, PhD students, and undergrads pursuing projects in design and control novel mechatronics systems, robot learning and autonomous driving. Thank you for your interest in the MSC Lab.Prospective Ph.D. Students: If you are interested in pursuing a Ph.D. under Prof Tomizuka's advisory, please send an email with your C.V. to Prof Tomizuka and apply through the official UC Berkeley graduate admissions portal.
UC Berkeley Undergraduate and Master Students: Current UC Berkeley undergraduate or master students hoping to gain hands-on research experience with us are expected to read the Research section in the website header to learn more about what the MSC Lab is working on. If you are interested in our research and believe you will be a good fit, you may send an email either to Prof Tomizuka or to the corresponding point of contact. Due to our limited space and equipment capacity, we can accommodate only a small number of undergraduate or master researchers and may not be able to respond to all inquiries.
Students from Other Institutions: Research opportunities for students outside UC Berkeley are limited. While you are welcome to reach out to express your interest, please understand that we may not be able to accommodate your request or respond immediately.

Double Champions at the RoCo Challenge at IROS 2026
We won 1st place in both tracks of the 2nd RoCo Challenge at IROS 2026: Industrial Board Assembly and Brick Assembly. The challenge benchmarks Physical AI through complex robotic assembly and dexterous manipulation. We’re thrilled to take home both championships and grateful to everyone who made this exciting competition possible!

Mechanical System Control Workshop (Tomizuka Festival)
We held the Mechanical System Control Workshop (Tomizuka Festival) on 7 August to honour Prof Tomizuka’s half-century legacy. Professor Tomizuka has mentored generations of researchers and engineers throughout his distinguished career. This event served as a wonderful opportunity to reconnect, share memories, and celebrate his enduring legacy. We thank all family members, students, colleagues and friends of Prof Tomizuka for attending and participating.
