Look-ahead Human-machine Interface for Assistance of Manual Vehicle Steering.
Guidance information is significant to the driver during manual steering of a vehicle.
With difficulty in perceiving the environment (e.g. in dense fog or whiteout conditions),
the driver may encounter problems of handling the vehicle safely. A supplementary guidance display, which
provides the future vehicle position and the road information, can provide the preview information for
the driver. Two different types of display law for predicting the future
position of the vehicle have been studied in previous research.
The kinematic display law with simple formulation is suitable for
low vehile speed, while the nonlinear gain-scheduled display law can be applied for a wide range of vehicle speed.
With the assistance of the steering guidance system, only proportional gain is necessary for the driver to safely steer the vehicle.
Simulation results show the advantage of the guidance display within the closed-loop system.
The steering human-in-the-loop simulator and
experiment setup will be used to further validate the effectiveness of the steering guidance system. (Kai-Ten Feng, August 1999)
